MY COSTA RICA WATERFALL TOUR EXPERIENCE

January 12, 2017

Costa Rica is NOT for the traveler of faint heart. That being said, there is something for everyone. Costa Rica is not Sandals Jamaica. It is NOT the place to kick back on the white sands with a drink in hand, looking out onto clear waters. If you're on the Pacific Ocean side, it is in fact a place to relax on the gray sand while looking out on the tumultuous gray waters. This rare beach day will be sandwiched between your adventurous days in the mountains doing adventurous activities. You also may have an Imperial (the official beer of Costa Rica).

Honestly, that sounds like a great day to me, and I know it is for a fact because I lived it for five days. I went on a waterfall tour during my time in Costa Rica with a lovely lady from New Orleans and she said that when she was researching vacation destinations, she saw that Costa Rica was the place to get down and dirty - and all out adventurous. She couldn't have been more right.

I was relieved to be out of the chill of the Northeast and to be wearing sporty tanks, shorts, and either trails shoes or Tevas every day. It really inspired me to kick start my health in the New Year, since our trip was from December 26 - 31. I got out of my rut. Their "Pura Vida" way of life is an invitation to explore the unknown and challenge yourself. No wonder everyone there is so happy, they dedicate their lives to breaking the ordinary.

The Food
Really, this is what you're all wondering about. If you like fresh food and basic ingredients - plantains, rice, beans, meat, eggs, and tortillas - then you're in luck. With the overcomplicated and contaminated food in the US and all the fake promises of "health" foods, it was relieving to eat this simple food. We also tried some of the more adventurous food - chicharron pork skin and meat and yucca fries with hot sauce. Paired with their local alcohol "Guara" and lime juice, this was honestly the best meal of the trip - and in a WHILE. This meal was made in a little restaurant surrounded by farms (the supply chain). It was made by an old Costa Rican woman out back - how more authentic can you get?

The Adventure
The defining thing about Costa Rica - and South America and Central America in general - are their huge mountain roads. The drives up and down the mountains to the zip lining and the waterfall tour were the scariest rides of my life. It was scary driving up to Monteverde - quite literally a city on a hill - because I was concerned about driving in the darkness on the way down. However that did not take away from the thrilling zip lining experience! There were about 20 different stops on the tour over the cloud forest. The last stop was "superman style", so I just flew face down, belly facing the abyss of trees.

I was so proud of my parents during the waterfall tour. We had to hike down a steep hill to the first waterfall, then walk through the river, on the side of rocks, avoid slippery slopes, and even hike to all ten waterfalls. At the last waterfall, my nearly 60-year-old father jumped ten feet off of a cliff into a pool. We ascended the final hike to the top of the mountain and my parents were beaming at the top with pride.

10x10= ONE HUNDRED: 100 =Things I Love Including You!

April 30, 2014

Since September 2012, I've gone through many changes and grown so much. I changed my school (well, college), my hair color twice, my hair length, my relationship status, my car, my house, sadly not my phone, my running shoes, and many more. However one thing I didn't change was my blogging platform and url. I've been here on dsdstyle.blogspot.com since September 2012, and I've created 100 posts since then. I'd like to thank all of you lovelies for believing in me and reading this babble I post sometimes. I never thought I'd accumulate any reader, but somehow I have. REVIEW: TONE IT UP PERFECT FIT PROTEIN POWDER & BARS

March 21, 2014

Some people are afraid to get into a workout or health eating schedule, however Karina and Katrina of Tone It Up make it a lot easier. They're easy to relate to, their workouts are fun, and their recipes looks delectable! Working out with Karina and Katrina are just like hanging out with two of your girlfriends. If you haven't headed over to http://toneitup.com/ then you should -- now!

They also make chocolate and vanilla protein powder, protein bars, and women's multivitamins on http://www.shoptoneitup.com/collections/perfect-fit. Today, I'll be reviewing the vanilla protein powder, and the Organic Chocolate Peanut Protein Bars!

I'm an absolute chocolate and peanut butter freak, as most people are (unless you're allergic, in that case I'm so sorry). I'm imagining waterfalls of chocolate and peanut butter right now as we speak. I love that this is a perfect, healthy chocolate peanut butter snack that I can feel good about. It has 7g of protein and 5g of fiber. 190 calories makes it a perfect snack, or pre/post workout! Pick yourself up one for $16 a box.

Perfect fit makes chocolate and vanilla protein powder. You can easily replace any recipe that calls for dough with it. It's way healthier, and adds protein and flavor! 70 cals for a packet of vanilla, and 80 cals for a packet of chocolate. Add it to shakes, pancakes, muffins, quiches, and more! There are no traces of gluten, soy, corn, GMOs, dairy, lactose, or fat. I think we've got all our bases covered here.

Now do you wanna see this powder in live action? Here's my recipe for peanut butter protein pancakes!

Ingredients:
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 tbsp. all natural peanut butter
  • 1 packet of Perfect Fit protein Powder
  • 1/2 cup Almond Milk

1. Blend the egg, one banana, milk and peanut butter in a blender.
2. Slice up the second banana and mix it with the other ingredients and the protein powder in a bowl.
3. Heat a stove top to medium heat, and coat a pan with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
4. Cook and flip the pancakes until they are brown on both sides.
5. Enjoy!

They were delicious! I hope you're all better at flipping pancakes than me. Oops! if you're interested in more, head on over to toneitup.com!

Here's a video of my reviewing the products and making the pancakes on the YouTube channel, make sure you subscribe!

FEATURE: EMILY-ANNE RIGAL OF WE STOP HATE!

February 28, 2014

Back in my older YouTube days I made a friend, Emily-Anne. She was always different in a good way. While everyone else was making music videos to Ke$ha's latest hits (nothing against my girl Ke$ha, of course), she was making inspirational and uplifting videos. I always knew she'd make something great of herself.

Emily-Anne, holding up a sign for "Active Minds Eating Disorder Awareness + Body Positivity Week" (Feb 24-27).

Now, she has! Emily-Anne is the founder and director of a Realize inc. anti-bullying/self esteem-raising NGO called We Stop Hate. The main idea of WSH is to stop teens that put other teens down just to raise their self esteem. Stopping this prevents the harmful impact it can have on the ones who are bullied. The organization also strives to give teens ways to raise their self-esteem.
This is done on various social media platforms. There are hundreds on videos on the site made by fellow teens who have similar experiences and are willing to help. Knowing your not alone can be the first step to a happy life. The word is spread through through videos, apparel, newsletters, and social media platforms. Aside from being featured on The Today Show, Seventeen Magzine, Forbes, MTV, CNN, and more, Emily-Anne also shared that she is working on a huge project withYouTubers and Celebrities and a self-esteem guide to be released in 2016!
WSH has been sponsored by Nickelodeon and The Body Shop.

Now, what about Emily-Anne? She's currently attending Barnard College at Columbia University majoring in Urban Studies. Self-esteem building is no new idea for Emily-Anne. She interned at Seventeen Magazine and worked with a health editor to make body peace videos about the Seventeen Magazine staff. She also interned at the Chew. Between her busy life at school and organizing WSH, she took time to catch up with me and ask some questions!

What keeps you going on a day when you're stressed?
"I try to take things one task a time. When I'm really busy, I prioritize. I have giant sticky notes and write own all the things that I need to do, and I have another giant sticky note, and write down what order it needs to get done. It keeps me sane. It's nice to see it visually."

"The act of being able to juggle different things is such a good skill."

How does it feel making a difference?
It feels really good to give back. By doing things to serve other people... it helps give you a sense of purpose. It feels really rewarding to do something to make a difference in someone else's life. On days when I feel like there's a lot to do, I can look back and realize I did something to help someone else, and it makes me want to continue. Like if you give a compliment to someone else, you feel good about yourself."

Inspirational words for people trying to make a difference?
"There's this quote that I really love:
'You don't have to be brave to start, but you have to start to be brave'
- Big Ziglar
My biggest advice for people that want to make a difference is just start. I didn't have all the answers, I just believed I could do something... I just started and learned along the way and that mentality just stayed with me all the way. You just have to try and it will all come together."

"Its about figuring what you want then going balls to the walls after that"

What's next after school?
"I'm a sophomore, I'll be doing four years, and my hope is to work full-time at WeStopHate after I graduate, working on the mission and growing the business when I graduate."

She also had some advice for either college freshmen, like myself, or even highschoolers. "I learned so much freshmen year. Where I am today and where I was last year is two difference people. You'll have plenty of time, don't worry."

I hope Emily-Anne's story inspired you. Thank you so much, Emily-Anne for catching up and letting me put you in the spotlight!

Beauty: Two Easy Beachy Hair Looks!

June 30, 2013

As I was spending my last week in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii, I was obviously in and out of the water. Wet, beachy hair can be some girls' worst nightmare, especially if beachy waves just don't happen for your hair. I share your pain, beachy waves just translates to frizzy locks for me. It's the struggle between wanting to dip in the beautiful aqua waters and go out after but not wanting to look like a wet dog. Here's two easy hairstyles that don't require any blow-drying so you can go from the beach and dinner in a reasonable amount of time.

1. The Queen's Crown
Don't fret, this look isn't as stuffy as it sounds. It's really simple. First, put your hair in a high ponytail. Then, either take a hair donut or the sock you use to make your sock bun, and bring it all the way to the root of your pony tail. Next, Try to spill your hair evenly over the donut, and secure that bun shape with another hair elastic. Braid the remaining hair and wrap it around your bun. Viola, your queen's crown! This is one of my new favorite looks.
2. The Princess's Tiara
A headband can always be a quick fix for a bad hair day, but why not use your own resources? This looks will keep them wondering. Take a two to four inch piece of hair from behind your ear and braid it. Take this braid and put it over your head, and secure it on the opposite side of your head with a bobby pin.

Both of these looks work well with semi-wet hair, so you don't need to take the extra time to blow dry your hair. These looks are relaxed enough to go with a crop top and shorts but fancy enough to pair with a maxi dress and gladiators. Enjoy your summer, and look out for my Hawaii 2012 LookBook on my YouTube!

VIDEO: NO MAKEUP MAKEUP TUTORIAL

March 21, 2013

I know there's about a million "no makeup" or "fresh look" tutorials on YouTube, but this is mine and it works fantastic. Just like I said in my previous post, the first and perhaps the most crucial step in your daily makeup routine is maintaining healthy skin. Healthy skin naturally glows and is almost baby soft. Blemishes will vanish! I made a video including the next actual steps in the makeup routine, and the products that I adore. Enjoy, and subscribe!

LIFESTYLE: HIT THE GYM WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR ROOM!

March 07, 2013

When most people think about getting active, they think it requires an expensive gym membership and equipment, or going out and playing a sport. However, all you really need is 10-20 minutes a day and your own body. Medicine balls, yoga mats, and weights are a nice plus, however to quote the one true principle of pilates, your body is your most important weight! If you’re in the mood to work out but don’t feel like facing the public, don’t sweat it! (Well, you will be sweating eventually.)

My room not only functions as my sleeping chambers and homework den, but a home gym as well! All you need is a TV/Computer (preferably a laptop) and your most important piece of equipment - your body! Here’s two ways to gym it up the Boo Radley way:

1. Blogilates: Youtube is a never ending beautiful black hole of helpful DIYs and tutorials. It’s almost made it possible to not have to actually buy anything or have professional training for anything. Like the amount of stars in our universe, I don’t think we will ever realize what an immense amount of DIY is available. My favorite star in that universe is Cassie Ho of Youtube.com/blogilates. She is a ceritified pilates instructor. Her channel is regularly updated with 10-15 minutes workouts of either Pilates, “HIIT” (cardio), HIITilates (A mixture of both), or specialized lower body, abs, or even prom body workouts, and even diet tips! The most you’ll need is a yoga mat and two hand weights, but that’s workout specific. I am obsessed with her and her workouts, she makes it easy to look great without a gym subscription - just a subscription to her channel. As she always says, “I’m gonna kill you, and you’re gonna love it!”

2. XFINITY On Demand: In the same respect, the Sports & Fitness Section’s “Fitness Workouts” of XFINITY On Demand is a black hole of DIY Workouts. However, the selection is much larger. You can choose from headings such as “10 minute Workouts”, “Abs”, “Cardio”, “Total Body,” and more. The workouts range from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on how much time you have. No matter what, there’s always time for a workout!

3.  Simple workouts that you can do in your room or anywhere: Whether you’re traveling or in the mood to try something out, you can simply google easy at home workouts and many come up.

Here’s one from fitsugar.com:

That definitely sounds like I need to try it!

Weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise, so don’t forget about what you’re eating! Major diet changes aren’t necessary, but little changes can make a big difference. For example, switching your snacks from chips or candy to delicious greek yogurt or a pack of nuts will give you your protein for the day. Easy substitutions can be worked in to your daily diet without devastating you. Also, drinking a lot of water rids your body of toxins, keeps you hydrated and promotes overall health and weight loss.
