Music Mondays: St. Joes Keeps Us Safe

March 23, 2015

To me, side projects are a just fun tidbits added along to the songs I already know by my favorite artists. I never seriously listened to them repeatedly like I do with my favorite artists - until now.

Summer 2014, the lead singer of The Wonder Years Dan Campbell, known as "Soupy" in the scene, released a solo side project  album "We Don't Have Each Other" called under the stage name Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties. The album tells the story of a man's worst year of his life. It's the story of him struggling over his father's death, his wife's miscarriage, and his wife leaving him. It sounds sad, and it is. However, I'm weird and I like sad music, it makes me happy. The songs have a chill melody and relaxed vibe, although the music is sad. The pure emotion makes me feel so much, I love music that makes me feel.

The songs I'm sharing today is "St. Joe Keeps Us Safe" is in my opinion Aaron West's lowest point. The song talks about him taking NYC public transportation to see his Irish Catholic mother. He vents to his mother about his father's death, the miscarriage, and his wife leaving him. His mother recognizes that they've never been that low, but encourages him that things will improve. I love this song because it's so real. I plan on doing an acoustic cover to it... stay tuned?

I got sick of the silence,
I got tired of the dark,
I was sleeping in late, I was wasting away, I was dying in small parts.
So I lit up a smoke and,
Took a walk through the park.
The dead leaves scrape concrete making it sound like you're next to me, arm in arm.
I was putting holes in the drywall.
I was hoping you'd save me from me.

I'm gonna go see my mother.
Take the LIRR.
Walk the cold Brooklyn streets towards Astoria, Queens
out to West Babylon.
I walked up the driveway.
Saw my Daddy's old car.
He's been gone for months but we covered it up. It still sits in the yard.

Well I spent my whole life saying I'd never need no one
but I think I might need you.
I think I might need you. I think I might need you.

We sat in the kitchen.
My mother's a soldier of god,
and so paintings of Jesus,
and statues of saints still adorn all the halls,
But we'll never go hungry,
thanks to the infant of Prague,
and St. Joe keeps us safe cause we buried him deep in a hole in the backyard.
I know things ain't been good since dad died.
I know you don't need this from me.

But mama, I'm breaking.
There's no light in the dark.
Dianne left this week. She said, "Son, look at me. I know we ain't been this low before
and I'm sorry Aaron.
I know this year has been hard.
If you're hurt then I'm hurt.
I won't make it worse. I'm always in your corner."

Well I spent my whole life saying I'd never need no one
but I think I might need you.
I think I might need you. I think I might need you.

Something's wrong.
I been waiting here too long.
She said, "I knew something was wrong. You ain't called here in too long.
Take the car and run. Take the car and run. Take the car and run."

LINKUP: MUSIC MONDAYS WITH "My So-Called Chaos"

July 14, 2014

Link-ups are a fabulous way in the bloggersphere for us bloggers to interact and mingle. It's like happy hour but with blog posts! This monday I thought I'd join in on Angie of mysocalledchaos.com's Music Monday link-up!

Every summer I make a new playlist. It can consist of songs that remind me of that summer, songs that I discovered that summer, and songs that just sound summer-y. For example "Summer" by Calvin Harris, duh! My music listening habits depend on who I see in concert. So far I've seen Paramore, Fall Out Boy, New Politics, The Front Bottoms, and Say Anything. I've been jamming to new and old Fall Out Boy and Paramore, and The Front Bottoms.
Here's a screenshot of my current Summer 2k14 playlist:

As you can see it's a mix of pop-punk, indie, folk, country, pop, and a favorite genre of mine I like to call "The Fault In Our Stars Soundtrack".

However the link-up wants me to choose one song I'm feeling specifically.. ahh this is so hard. I choose....

Thunder Clatter by Wild Cub

I chose this song because it's a little folk-y and a little dance-y. That's how I like my music (i.e. Two Door Cinema Club/The Wombats). I'm a sucker for more than one voices singing at the same time. Any song that I can imagine driving around on a summer night to, I'm all for it.

Stay tuned for a blog post about my trip to London!

REVIEW: TDCC In Boston!

October 09, 2013

Two Door Cinema Club, a four-piece Irish Indie Rock band, has been blazing the indie music scene since their start in 2007. However it wasn’t until the hits “What You Know” and “I Can Talk” gained success on their debut album “Tourist History” things started to pick up. Now they’re headlining an tour across America and spent two nights in Boston this past weekend, October 5th and 6th at The Royale nightclub.

They must have felt home with Boston’s overload of cozy pubs, because at the end of their set they thanked us for welcoming them so warmly to our lovely city. Being the gracious hosts they are, they chose two amazing up and coming indie bands to open for them. I can foresee these bands picking up fame as fast as TDCC did.

The first band was “Small Pools”. I loved how young and upbeat they were. Everyone usually just watched the opening acts unenthusiastically, waiting for the main event to go down. However, I was in no way passively watching this band perform. They played all of the songs off their self-titled ep. My personal favorite was an upbeat indie pop song called “Mason Jar”. The announced that once they get home they will be working on an album. I would definitely check it out to have summer jams to cruise around in my car.

The second band was “St. Lucia”, a five-piece band, including a girl on the keyboard, with a new wave, electric sound reminiscent of the band “The Shins”. With an 80’s era sound, they sure got the crowd involved.

Finally the main event, Two Door Cinema Club. I was too excited to sit still! They graced the stage well dressed and hair slicked back like the stylish Irish men they are. Flashing lights made the stage look like a rave and the wonderful indie rock filled the Royale. The y played some of my favorites including “Something Good Can Work”, “This is the Life” and even a song I was pleasantly surprised to hear, “Under Cover Martyn”. For an hour and a half I was on cloud nine. I would definitely say I am pleased with this being my first time seeing them, and would for sure see them again. They’re just going to keep growing in fame.
